Product Descriptions
Two rigid boxes are used for brands looking to give their products a higher-quality packaged look while also providing a sturdy storage solution. A two-piece rigid setup box comes fully assembled and ready to use right out of the box. The box consists of an outer lid and an inner base that are separate but work together to form a box. Two-piece rigid boxes are also referred to as setup boxes, lift-off lid boxes, telescoping boxes, lid-and-base boxes, etc., in the packaging industry.
Because of the rigid structure associated with luxury packaging, using slow lift lids creates a more intentional unboxing experience, which is one of the reasons luxury two-piece rigid boxes are frequently used in the beauty industry (cosmetics), electronics (tablets), jewelry (ring boxes), apparel accessories (handbags), and premium product launches (outdoor gear).
We create custom two-piece rigid boxes using thick chipboard and greyboard materials covered in decorative paper, kraft stocks, and textured surfaces. One of the aspects that defines a 2-piece rigid box is that they are produced as per customers' needs with regard to the dimensions of the box, how they want it to be displayed, and how the product being shipped has to be protected while being shipped.
2-piece rigid boxes are offered in a variety of structural designs based on the anticipated use of the box. Boxes that have lids that cover the entire box will look completely enclosed because the height of the lid is the same as the height of the stock. Boxes that have partial lids will reveal part of the base of the box, which will make the box easier to open and use less material for the lid. Some examples of structural designs used most often for apparel and/or retail items are shoebox-style boxes and standard telescoping boxes.
There are several ways printed packaging is created, including interior and exterior graphics and printed using CMYK, PMS colour match, metallic foil & other specialty finishes. The printed products will provide a more unique and complete presentation on retail shelves as well as on influencer kits, PR Mailers, and DTC packaging campaigns.
Structured for Premium Product Display and Protection
The construction of the two-piece rigid box has made it a very popular packaging format because its sturdy construction allows for a high-quality presentation of the product inside the box. As the boxes are manufactured from very thick non-folding chipboard, they help provide additional strength for those fragile and/or premium products when being handled, displayed in retail outlet displays and then shipped.
Using a lift-off lid type structure of the box also helps to improve the presentation of the product being shipped to the customer. The gradual removal of the lid reveals the product that is inside the box to the customer.
Luxury brands often use this style to create an image of the value of the product within the package. Another practical use of a two-piece rigid setup box is for packing operations. The fact that the lid and the base are two separate components allows the product to be quickly packed into the base before closing the top lid. This makes this format great for high-volume retail fulfillment or subscription packaging programs.
Additionally, there is a lot of design flexibility for a two-piece setup box since the lids and bases can have very different finishes, textures and print styles. For example, brands can use a matte black base with a metallic foil lid or textured wraps with contrasting interior colors to make the box look distinctive from others.
Material Selection for Custom Two-Piece Rigid Boxes
When making a custom two-piece rigid box, there are typically 2 main types of materials to choose from when manufacturing the core structure of the packaging: chipboard and greyboard.
Depending on how much weight is anticipated on the product, the thickness of the board will vary for packaging use. Based on weight considerations, packaging engineers will choose the correct thickness for the lids or bases, ensuring that they will not lose their shape during shipping, handling, or long-term storage of the products.
To get the best possible print quality, duplex chipboard is the preferred choice of material for projects involving printing that require a sharp print, as duplex chipboard has a white-coated surface that can accept printing ink. Other popular materials for manufacturing custom two-piece rigid boxes include standard cardboard and rigid board; each has different properties and specific uses in a custom box packaging.
Kraft paper can be used to wrap the outside of the two-piece rigid boxes for custom packaging. There are numerous custom inserts that provide product stability and organization, including EVA foam inserts, molded pulp trays, plastic trays, and cardboard dividers to hold products securely in position while providing a clean look from inside.
Recyclable chipboard and soy-based inks may also be available to help brands meet their sustainability goals based on the vendor.
Print Enhancement and Finishing Features
Luxury packaging has a significant impact on how luxury products are viewed by end-users. Two-piece rigid boxes can employ advanced printing techniques as well as decorative finishing techniques for branding applications at high price points.
Offset printing is a good choice for large quantity production runs due to the nature of printed artwork, while digital printing is preferable for smaller quantity production runs or for prototype packaging projects. Using PMS colours allows for uniformity between retail promotions and product lines.
There are various finishing options that can enhance product appearance, such as matte lamination, which provides a clean, sophisticated look, as well as gloss lamination, which provides a shiny finish to products. Soft-touch lamination provides a smooth, soft feel to packaging that is commonly associated with luxury cosmetics and electronics.
Additional decorative techniques may include spot UV, which can be applied to specific artwork areas to create contrast and dimension in the appearance of the finished product, as well as the application of metallic foil stamping in either gold, silver, rose gold or other reflective finishes to highlight logos or branding elements.
Embossing or debossing on the surface of the box creates a raised or recessed design element, respectively. To enhance scratch and fingerprint prevention, UV coatings and BOPP lamination can also be utilized.
Packaging Applications across Retail and Luxury Industries
